The Early Years
The Yamaha Corporation itself has its beginnings way back in the 19th century, in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. Founder Torakusu Yamaha started out manufacturing musical instruments, including pianos and organs, a legacy which is reflected in today’s company logo: three interlocked piano tuning forks. For decades, this was all Yamaha did, but following the devastation and economic downturns caused by World War II, many Japanese companies sought to diversify their product lines. This included repurposing war-time manufacturing machines to build other products. Yamaha, helmed at that time by Genichi Kawakami, invested itself in the production of small engines for motorcycles and other vehicles.
Their two-stroke engines were so successful that the Yamaha Motor Company spun off from its parent in the 1950s and began to produce the vehicles to house their engines. Four-stroke engines came about in 1968 and the company took off, becoming a household name with their fast and well-built motorcycles.
1980s Expansion
With years of experience in the field of motorcycles under its belt, the company turned its attention to the burgeoning fields of personal watercraft and off-highway vehicles. They began to produce ATVs and PWC during the 1980s. Their popular WaveRunner® PWC, released in 1986, became an iconic marine-based vehicle for recreational purposes. Not only could the company conquer land, but they mastered the water as well!Into The 21st Century
While the parent corporation has continued to produce musical instruments and electronics of many types, the Yamaha Motor Company has been able to see success in the field of transportation. They continue to be a leader in the PWC field as well as a top manufacturer of quads and motorcycles that reach high speeds and are sought after by novices and professionals alike. The company also produces snowmobiles and even car engines, demonstrating their adaptability at every turn.Come visit our Cookeville dealership to see our full selection of products by this industry leader.
